Dear friend,
Did you know that our Oceans fuel every other breath we take? Neither did I. Fifty to 70% of our oxygen comes from the Ocean. That's more than all of the world's rainforests combined. But human activities are pushing the world's marine ecosystems toward collapse. According to WWF's Living Blue Planet Report, populations of marine vertebrates have declined by 49% between 1970 and 2012, with some fish species declining by almost 75%.
Without healthy oceans, our prosperity ā our very survival ā will be threatened.
Currently only about 2% of our oceans are protected with barely 1% strongly protected in "no-take" reservesāplaces where no one is allowed to extract fish, oil or other resources. This is not enough to avert disaster! Marine scientists recommend strong protection of 20-30% of our oceans to save marine life from extinction.
That's why I'm fundraising to support MARINE CONSERVATION INSTITUTE. Their Global Ocean Refuge System (GLORES, pronounced glƓr-ees) will establish strong protection for at least 20% of every individual habitat -- what scientists call a marine biogeographic region -- that exists in our oceans. GLORES is a strategic, science-based way to safeguard marine ecosystems and enable marine life to recover.
